Our forum, entitled Everything, Everywhere, All at Once: Housing and Community Outcomes, will include national and regional experts who will help us understand why policies are shifting and the often unexpected connections between housing and other issues.
From the nation’s mayors to the Executive Branch, housing for all has become a top priority. This year’s panel discussion will explore national and local developments that seek to promote fair housing and remove barriers, including the recent unveiling of President Biden’s ambitious housing plan, Governor Wes Moore’s affordable housing legislation, and Montgomery County’s attainable housing plan.
The program will be hosted by Dan Reed, Regional Policy Director for Greater Greater Washington and urban planner/writer. It will also feature Brian Kramer, an MCPS teacher at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School who will share his experience of being a homeless student and why he became an advocate. Chuck Cook, Chief Legislative Officer for the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development, will share the intent and details of Gov. Moore’s plan for fair and equitable housing for all. Jason Sartori, Montgomery County Planning Dept. Director, will provide local stats and context for the Montgomery County Attainable Housing plan that will be coming before the County Council later in June. And author Richard Kahlenberg, Director of the American Identity Project, Director of Housing at the Progressive Policy Institute, and professorial lecturer at George Washington University's Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration will discuss the history of housing segregation and education. Del. Vaughn Stewart who has a long-term commitment to housing for all and worked closely with Gov. Moore’s office, will provide closing remarks.
Proceeds will benefit CUAH's Youth Creating Change program, the award-winning social justice incubator that provides high school student activists with leadership/organizer training, mentorship from community leaders, financial support for activism, and public recognition.
