MCPS Asian Pacific American Heritage Month

  • 2100 Baltimore Road Rockville, MD, 20851 United States (map)

"You are invited to join us for a moderated panel discussion in honor of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month on Wednesday, May 30, 2018, from 6:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m., in the Auditorium at Rockville High School, 2100 Baltimore Road, Rockville, MD.

The event is hosted by Dr. Maria V. Navarro, Chief Academic Officer, and Dr. Kimberly A. Statham, Deputy Superintendent, and will be moderated by Dr. Donna Hollingshead, Associate Superintendent of School Administration.

The evening will begin with an excerpt from Honor and Duty: The Mississippi Delta Chinese, a documentary from executive producer and Montgomery County resident, Samantha Cheng.  This film tells the little known story of the growth and transformation of early Chinese immigrants to the Mississippi Delta during the 1800s, including the implications of exclusion from public schools.  Ms. Cheng will join our distinguished panel  as they examine how the unique history and experiences of the diverse members of the Asian American community informs relationships to educational institutions and what this means for our Asian American students in MCPS.  Understanding the complexity of the Asian American experience and navigating biases and assumptions is essential to our goal of providing an equitable, world-class education to every student.
